User experience design (UXD) workshop for agencies

This workshop introduces small to midsize agencies and design firms to user experience design best practices. Given the broad scope of the subject matter the workshop is not an in-depth exposition of any particular aspect, but rather a crash course in the key principles and practices of UXD with an emphasis on how to incorporate them into a typical agency workflow. Workshops are conducted on-site at your firm for any number of attendees.

User experience design (UXD) is a hot topic in the agency world. It has become an industry buzzword and many agencies are scrambling to incorporate UXD into their creative and digital development processes. In recent years the output of many agencies has quickly shifted from traditional print and broadcast to predominantly digital deliverables: websites, landing pages, apps, e-commerce, digital promotions, broadcast email, online CRM, SEO, banner ads and mobile everything. UXD plays a critical role in all these deliverables.

This workshop is for smaller firms that feel the need to catch up to large shops or specialized digital agencies — and even in some cases their clients — who often have been practicing various UXD disciplines for many years. I’ll introduce your staff to the fundamentals and give them what they need to start incorporating best practices immediately. (This workshop is not for you if your agency is already creating personas, building interactive prototypes, doing heuristic evaluations and conducting usability tests during the process of creating digital products.)

Workshop Structure

The morning session (9:00 to noon) focuses on learning the principles of user experience design and why UXD is critical to agencies and their clients. The morning session is relevant to a broad audience including agency leadership, account management staff and creatives.

  • What is user experience design?
  • Why is UXD important for agencies and their clients?
  • Key principles: Ten Dictums of UXD
  • Incorporating UXD best practices into the agency digital development process

The afternoon session (1:00 to 4:00) is a hands-on workshop primarily for the agency team members responsible for the creation and development of digital deliverables. Attendees will be taken through a mock project to gain exposure to applying the principles from the morning session in actual practice. (Everyone is welcome but staff members who are not as hands-on may wish to attend only the morning session.)

  • Creating a project plan
  • Contextual inquiry
  • Creating personas
  • Information architecture — card sorting exercise
  • Prototyping — using Axure RP
  • Heuristic evaluation
  • Usability testing — following Steve Krug’s methodology
  • Resources for those who want to learn more
